[Editor’s Pick] SuJu rocks the Latin vibe

Despite going through different obstacles throughout the past 13 years, Super Junior is still going strong as the Hallyu King. Their last hit Lo Siento featuring Latin singer Leslie Grace was their first attempt in a brand new genre, and it affirmed both their musical talent and impressive popularity. Half a year after Lo Siento, Super Junior brings another wave of Latin sound with the album One More Time!

This time, the SuJu members collaborate with Mexican band Reik for the reggaeton Latin pop number One More Time (Otra Vez) (Feat. REIK) (Track 1). Andreas Stone Johansson (the composer of Super Junior’s Island, EXO’s “Miracles in December” and NCT Dream’s JOY) and Denniz Jamm (the composer of Tae Min’s Goodbye and Tae Yeon’s Circus) work as the main producers for the title track.

When I first listened to One More Time, for a moment, I thought it wasn’t as good as I expected. But afterwards, the chorus part kept replaying in my mind and the song gets very addictive. The bridge, in particular, upgrades the song to a higher level of sexiness. I’m so obsessed with the bridge, especially Shin Dong and Eun Hyuk’s voices in the final part. The album also comes with a Super Junior version (all Korean lyrics) of One More Time (Otra Vez) (Track 2).

Hook song Animals (Track 3) is my favorite of the album. The mid-tempo Latin pop song combines with elements of tropical music to form a catchy melody. Like the title track, the alluring Animals is about desire: “I wanna make this moment explode, so come on baby come along. You make me want you so desperately. In the end, me and you, we’re just animals.” I personally think Animals is a better choice for title track than One More Time. Ye Sung’s voice blends well with Animals, bringing a more mysterious sound and irresistible feeling to the sexy song.

Ahora Te Puedes Marchar (Track 4) is a remake of Luis Miguel’s same-titled classic. Comparing the two songs, SJ’s remake has the same melody but applies more layers of sounds that bring out a funkier and more vibrant energy. Though I understand none of the lyrics, this remake version definitely gives off a dynamic vibe that relieves your stress right away. It reminds me of Super Junior’s “Sunny” and Rokuko and sounds like a song that everyone would sing along to at a SuJu concert!

As one of the stars that made a name for K-pop, Super Junior still receives a lot of love and support from all over the world. Continuing on the success of Lo Siento, One More Time reached #1 on the iTunes chart in 26 countries. From Lo Siento to One More Time, SuJu’s success in Latin-style pop has paved the way for the group to explore more of the genre and other musical possibilities. Can’t wait for Kyu Hyun to return to the group and make new musical attempts with the members!
