[Feature Articles] YesAsia 2018 Bestsellers – Half-Year Report

The below rankings are based on sales of movie, music and TV releases on YesAsia.com from January 1 to June 30, 2018. Sales of all editions and versions of the same title are summed up to determine the total sales and ranking of each title.


BEST-SELLING K-POP RELEASES

K-pop sensation BTS, last year’s best-selling artist, conquers the top spot again with the Love Yourself ‘Tear’ album, which was released less than two months ago. SHINee’s Jong Hyun comes in at #2 on the bestsellers chart with his posthumous album Poet | Artist, and his group’s tenth anniversary release The Story of Light ranks sixth overall. EXO is again in the top ten, while subunit EXO-CBX and labelmate NCT break into the chart for the first time. Monsta X, GOT7 and Twice continue to rank in the top ten bestsellers. BLACKPINK emerges at #10 with their first mini-album.

BEST-SELLING J-POP RELEASES

Korean idols occupy nine of the top ten spots in the Japanese music bestsellers chart, which largely echoes the K-pop chart. EXO and BTS unsurprisingly come in first and second with their new albums at the half-year mark, and SHINee ranks third with their first Japan best-of album. Twice and Monsta X both have two releases in the top ten, while Seventeen debuts at #5 with their first Japanese album. Arashi is the lone Japanese artist represented with the group’s latest concert tour in seventh place.

BEST-SELLING C-POP RELEASES

JJ Lin charts at #1 with Message in a Bottle, while Hacken Lee rises to #2 with his 30th anniversary concert, which was #4 on last year’s Chinese concerts chart. Pop diva Jolin Tsai and Lu Han share third place, and EXO remains strong with last year’s The War still charting in the C-pop bestsellers. Cantopop singers AGA, Gin Lee, Hubert Wu and Lowell Lo also occupy top ten positions. Sandy Lam rounds out the chart with her reissued debut album, which was released in 1985.

BEST-SELLING MOVIES

Reviews for John Woo‘s Manhunt weren’t exactly glowing, but for old-school Hong Kong cinema fans, the director’s return to action is a must-see regardless as it edged out even Chasing the Dragon‘s Donnie YenAndy Lau team-up for first place. Chinese action remains the most popular genre with Zhang Jin vehicle The Brink, wuxia film Brotherhood of Blades: The Infernal Battlefield, SPL entry Paradox and Wu Jing‘s record-smashing Wolf Warriors II also making the top ten movie bestsellers. Two very different Korean films break into the top ten: acclaimed historical drama A Taxi Driver starring Song Kang Ho and notorious psychological crime drama Real starring Kim Soo Hyun.

BEST-SELLING TV DRAMAS

Three of last year’s best-selling TV dramas – hit Korean fantasy Goblin, Startling By Each Step remake Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo and popular Chinese period fantasy Eternal Love – continue to rank high in the top three spots. The rest of the top ten is similarly occupied by Korean romances, like 1% of Anything and Suspicious Partner, and trendy Chinese period epics (Princess Agents, Lost Love in Times). Korea’s A Good Wife remake starring Jeon Do Yeon completes the top ten.
