Have Lunch 10,000 Feet Above Sea Level on a Glacier in the Swiss Alps

Everything about the Alpine town of Gstaad is over the top, from the opulent chalets and VIP clientele to the glitzy après-ski scene. (The likes of Brigitte Bardot, Liz Taylor, and Richard Burton holidayed here, after all.)

Now Gstaad Palace, the region’s most luxurious hotel, is taking the town’s gilded reputation to new heights (literally), with an exclusive winter package combining a 60-minute private helicopter ride and lunch on a glacier.

After taking off, you’ll be poured a glass of champagne (the perfect antidote to any in-flight jitters) and given an exclusive tour of Switzerland’s mountainous area by your experienced Air-Glaciers pilot. You’ll pass idyllic villages and towering peaks as you make your way to the postcard-perfect town of Zermatt, home to Matterhorn, the most famous mountain of the Swiss Alps. Once you’ve done a lap of the snow-capped giant, it’s on to lunch at Refuge l’Espace, a rustic mountain lodge perched on a glacier nearly 10,000 feet above sea level.

There, enjoy a belly-warming spread of sausages and cheese with truffle oil and roasted potatoes. Don’t leave without trying the tarte Tatin, which is baked in a wood stove and served with heavy cream.

Then it’s back to your luxe accommodations at Gstaad Palace, where there’s an indulgent spa — complete with saunas, steam baths, and an authentic hammam — perfect for post-trip pampering.
