Hundreds of flights were cancelled.
After a weekend of heavy snow in Chicago, Southwest Airlines ran out of de-icing fluid at Midway Airport and cancelled more than 220 flights from the airport on Sunday.
As of Monday morning, “Southwest has resumed operations at Chicago (Midway) and expects to operate a close to normal schedule,” a spokesperson for the airline confirmed to Travel + Leisure.
The airline proactively cancelled about 220 flights from Chicago Midway on Sunday afternoon “due to the severity of the winter weather,” a spokesperson said, according to the Chicago Tribune. Via Twitter response, the airline revealed that it had run low on de-icing fluid and was waiting for replenishment.
“The glycol has been replenished and the airport deicing equipment is fully functional,” a spokesperson for the airline told T+L on Monday morning. “Those developments, coupled with a more positive weather forecast for Chicago position us to safely operate our more than 250 departures out of Chicago Midway.”
This marks the second time this winter that Southwest has cancelled flights over de-icing fluid issues at Midway. The day after Christmas, the airline cancelled almost 90 flights because of delays over de-icing aircraft.

Midway alerted passengers via Twitter that the airport was still dealing with cancelled flights. Travelers flying out of Midway should confirm flight status with their airlines.
